Start on Newcastle / North side of Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Run West (river on your left).
Run under Tyne Bridge, Swing Bridge and High-Level Bridge.
The Tyne Bridge has been the symbol of the city since its completion in 1928, along with the High-Level Bridge, which opened in 1849 and is a double-deck bridge allowing road and rail traffic. The Swing Bridge was an engineering marvel in the Victorian era as it was one of the first bridges designed with a rotating section allowing ships to pass.
Run underneath next bridge. Turn right off the quayside to the road under the bridge (B1600 Close). Cross when safe and run up Hanover Street opposite. Continue up and onto Clavering Place.
Continue ahead through tunnel on Forth St. Turn left onto Westgate Rd. Turn left onto Neville St. Run past main Central train station on your left.
Cross over at traffic lights when safe. Run up Bewick St. Turn right into Thomas Bewick Square. Turn left into Pink Lane. Cross over the road (Clayton St W) when safe and continue along Pink Lane. Cross over Westgate Rd when safe. Run on the pedestrianised path area to the west of West Walls. Follow the walls round to the right.
Just to the right on the other side of the wall is Blackfriar’s Church Ruins. These buildings were restored, and the Grade I listed 13th Century Friary, which once housed the Dominican Order Friars from the 1200s to the 1500s, is now used as a restaurant and space for craft workshops.
Follow the path by the walls to the Chinese Gate. Turn left at Chinese Gate onto St Andrew’s Street. Cross over the main road, Gallowgate, when safe and continue along St Andrew’s Street. Turn right, then left into Strawberry Lane.
Turn right onto Strawberry Place, cross over when safe, and turn left up St James Street. Turn left onto Terrace Place. Turn right onto Leazes Terrace. Enter Leazes Park at the end of Leazes Terrace. Follow the path ahead to the lake.
Leazes Park, Newcastle’s oldest park, opened in 1873, has been restored almost to its original layout. In the park, you’ll find tennis courts, basketball courts, and open grassy areas for a game of frisbee. The Jubilee Gates were added in 1896 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, and over time, the park was developed further with the addition of deer and aviaries.
Run clockwise around lake. Follow path down towards tennis courts to left of Leazes Terrace. Exit Leazes Park onto Leazes Terrace. Turn left onto Leazes Crescent.
Cross over Leazes Park Road when safe. Run down Saint Thomas Crescent. Turn left onto St Thomas St. Cross when safe and turn right to run down King’s Rd. Run past Haymarket Lane. Turn right, opposite the old red brick University building, into King’s Walk.
At the end of King’s Walk, cross over Barras Bridge main road when safe. Head right and cross over to B1307 St Mary’s Place when safe. Run down the main pedestrianised shopping road, Northumberland St.
Turn right onto Blackett St. Turn left at Grey’s Monument to run down Grey St.
Continue down Grey St. Cross over Mosley St when safe. Continue ahead along Dean St.
