A short walk along one of the most history-rich canals in the United Kingdom. The Stourbridge Canal’s construction was completed in 1779 by an engineer named Thomas Dadford in an effort to open up a route for carrying coal from Dudley to Stourbridge. Since then, the Stourbridge Canal has become one of the most popular landmarks in Birmingham, especially for relaxing outdoor activities like walking.

The Stourbridge Canal
This walking route starts off at the car park on Bridge Street. Please note that there is parking available for easy access to the starting point of the route.
From the parking lot, cross the bridge to the starting point of the route on the northern side of the Stourbridge Canal then follow the pathway leading along the canal.
Part 1 of the Stourbridge Canal Walk in Birmingham
The first stopping point is just after lock 11. The canal broadens after lock 11 where there is a bench located next to the canal. If you planned on having a snack, this would be a good stop on the route for it. On sunny days, there are a lot of birds along the Stourbridge Canal, making it a beautiful outdoor walk for enjoying nature in Birmingham.
Part 2 of the Stourbridge Canal Walk in Birmingham
The second landmark is at lock 10, which is on a narrow part of the canal, followed by lock 9. After lock 9, the canal broadens again. It is also worth mentioning that this is the broadest part of the canal on this specific route. Because this is a quick short walk, there is no need to stop here unless you are planning on taking in Stourbridge Canal’s surroundings.
Part 3 of the Stourbridge Canal Walk in Birmingham
The rest of the route up to Swan Lane is a straight walk down the path.
If you’re looking for a hang-out spot before making your way back down along the canal to the car park, Samson & Lion Pub, Wordsley is just up the road.
Simply walk up Swan Lane, turning right into Brierley Hill Road and Samson & Lion Pub will be on the right, a couple of blocks on.
