5km Run Loop Birmingham

A 5km loop in the quiet streets and canal towpaths around central Birmingham, that links the 3km and 1.5km run loops. This run is perfect in daylight or at night-time as all of the route is on lit pavements/paths. Just beware you may have to run past lots of tourists along the canal if the weather is nice!

Route overview

Pictorial directions:

Start at Council House. Cross Victoria Sq. Run down Pinfold St. Right into Navigation St.

Part 1 of 5km run loop in Birmingham

Go under flyover. Turn right up path to Holliday St. Left along Holliday St.

Part 2 of 5km run loop in Birmingham

Go under bridge. First left onto canal. Left at canal. Follow round corner and keep on.

Gas Street Basin houses some of the best restaurants with great views, a cozy atmosphere, and of course, great food.

Part 3 of 5km run loop in Birmingham

Through Broad St tunnel, past Sealife Centre. Cross canal twice to run back (by Malt House pub).

Part 4 of 5km run loop in Birmingham

Through Broad St tunnel again (on other side). Exit canal at James Brindley Canalhouse pub. Left up Bridge St.

Part 6 of the 5km run loop in Birmingham

Cross over Broad St. Right in front of Rep Theatre. Follow path back to city centre.

Follow path around Town Hall back to entrance of Council House.

Part 8 of the 5km run loop in Birmingham

Continue running past Council House. Run NE. Turn 1 st left . Turn 1st right into Edmund St.

Part 9 of the 5km run loop in Birmingham

Continue along Edmund St. Cross over Newhall St.

Part 10 of the 5km run loop in Birmingham

Turn right into Church St. Run to Cathedral Square. Turn left onto Colmore Row.

Part 11 of the 5km run loop in Birmingham

Run one complete loop around outer edge of Cathedral Sq.

Part 12 of the 5km run loop in Birmingham

Run part way round a second loop of Cathedral Sq. Turn left into Waterloo St.

Part 13 of the 5km run loop in Birmingham

Run to Victoria Square and back to start.

Victoria Square is widely accepted as the city’s centre since the local road sign distances are measured from here. You can also find a variety of sculptures and artworks.
